AGB Stars as Tracers of Star Formation Histories: Implications for GAIA Photometry and Spectroscopy
نویسنده
چکیده
We argue that tracing star formation histories with GAIA using main sequence turn-off (MSTO) point dating will mainly be effective in cases of very mild interstellar extinction (EB−V < 0.5). For higher reddenings the MSTO approach will be severely limited both in terms of traceable ages (t < 0.5 Gyr at 8 kpc; EB−V = 1.0) and/or distances (d = 2 kpc if t ≤ 15 Gyr; EB−V = 1.0), since the MSTO will be located at magnitudes too faint for GAIA. AGB stars may alternatively provide precise population ages with GAIA for a wide range of ages and metallicities, with traceable distances of up to 250 kpc at EB−V = 0 (15 kpc if EB−V = 2.0). It is essential however that effective temperatures, metallicities, and reddenings of individual stars are derived with the precision of σ(log Teff) ∼ 0.01, σ([M/H]) ∼ 0.2, and σ(EB−V ) ∼ 0.03, to obtain σ(log t) ∼ 0.15. This task is quite challenging for GAIA photometry and spectroscopy, though preliminary tests show that comparable precisions may be achieved with GAIA medium band photometry.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملObjective Determination of Star Formation Histories
Objective determination of a star formation history from a colourmagnitude diagram, independently of assumed parametric descriptions, is necessary to determine the evolutionary history of a galaxy. We introduce a new method for solving maximum likelihood problems through variational calculus, and apply it to the case of recovering an unknown star formation history, SFR(t), from a colour-magnitu...
متن کاملA Spitzer Irac Census of the Asymptotic Giant Branch Populations in Local Group Dwarfs. Ii. Ic 1613
We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC photometry of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613. We compare our 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 μm photometry with broadband optical photometry and find that the optical data do not detect 43% and misidentify an additional 11% of the total AGB population, likely because of extinction caused by circumstellar material. Further, we find that a narrowband...
متن کاملEvidence for a Long-standing Top-heavy Imf in the Central Parsec of the Galaxy
We classify 329 late-type giants within 1 parsec of Sgr A, using the adaptive optics integral field spectrometer SINFONI on the VLT. These observations represent the deepest spectroscopic data set so far obtained for the Galactic Center, reaching a 50% completeness threshold at the approximate magnitude of the helium-burning red clump (KS ∼ 15.5 mag.). Combining our spectroscopic results with N...
متن کاملDwarf elliptical galaxies in Centaurus A group : stellar populations in AM 1339 - 445 and AM 1343 - 452 ⋆ ⋆ ⋆
We study the red giant populations of two dE galaxies, AM 1339-445 and AM 1343-452, with the aim of investigating the number and luminosity of any upper asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars present. The galaxies are members of the Centaurus A group (D ≈ 3.8 Mpc) and are classified as outlying (R ≈ 350 kpc) satellites of Cen A. The analysis is based on near-IR photometry for individual red giant ...
